Headaches Q & A

What Causes Headaches?

Headaches may be triggered by any number of potential causes, from caffeine withdrawal to vascular issues. Tightness in the upper back and neck is another common cause of headaches, including sometimes severe headaches. Tightness in these muscles may be caused by whiplash, other trauma, posture, stress, and other causes. When these muscles tighten, they can place pressure on the surrounding bones and nerves, which can cause a headache.

How Can Chiropractic Care Alleviate Headaches?

Chiropractors can help with many kinds of headaches and often reduce the frequency and severity of headaches caused by muscle tension in the upper back and neck. Your chiropractor is primarily concerned with helping correct any neuromusculoskeletal problems that may be the source of your headache. Chiropractors have a variety of ways of relaxing soft tissue and adjusting the spine. For patients suffering from a tension-induced headache, a chiropractor may suggest massage therapy to relax the muscles and reduce the tension in them. Chiropractic manipulations may also be appropriate to realign the spine. Often, these treatments are complemented by a discussion of what is causing the muscle tension and ways that stressor can be reduced.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Headaches?

Chiropractic care is a natural and safe way to treat headaches. It looks at how the different systems in the body, the muscular, skeletal and nervous systems, affect each other and seeks to treat them as necessary. Chiropractors hold doctoral degrees in their field, which they only earn after many years of studying how the body works. They can determine when chiropractic care could help alleviate a headache, and they are qualified to suggest and administer a chiropractic treatment. Every headache sufferer is an individual case and may require special instructions or recommendations from their chiropractor. If your condition requires the attention of other health care specialists, your chiropractor will notify you and make the  appropriate referral.
