Back Pain Q&A

Are There Different Types of Back Pain?

There are many different kinds of back pain, ranging from general soreness in the muscles to acute, shooting pain in the spine. People can suffer from soft-tissue injuries and pains in the lower and upper back, as well on either side of the back. Skeletal and nervous system problems can develop anywhere along the spine. All of these can vary in severity from minor discomforts to debilitating pain.

What Treatments are Available for Back Pain?

Chiropractors have several ways of treating back pain, depending on the nature, location, and source of the pain. Most importantly, almost all chiropractic methods of alleviating back pain are non-invasive and don’t involve long recovery periods. In fact, patients often can go on with their days immediately after treatment.

Some possible treatments a chiropractor may suggest for back pain include the following:

  • massage therapy to relax muscles and alleviate soft-tissue soreness
  • physical therapy to recover from a specific back injury
  • chiropractic manipulations to adjust spinal misalignments
  • acupuncture to restore balance and energy in the body

In addition to these treatments, chiropractors are also often able to help patients identify the cause of their back pain and think about changes they can make to address the underlying cause.

What is a Typical Back Pain Treatment Like?

Recovering from back pain can be a long process, especially if the pain is severe. In some cases, chiropractors may recommend multiple treatments or ongoing management of the pain.

Individual treatments, however, typically last about as long as a normal doctor’s or dentist’s appointment. Some treatments, of course, take longer than others. Most appointments can easily be fit into a normal day, though. Patients are usually notified ahead of time if their appointment will require extra time.
